BEST BOOKS OF 2022

On My Bookshelf: These are the books that have captured my attention this year. They are compelling reads that you can share with your book club groups.

HORSE by Geraldine Brooks

I became so enamored by Geraldine Brooks’ literary prowess that I went and bought all her previous novels. Her research and dialogue are a master class in creative writing.

METROPOLIS by B.A. Shapiro

A self-storage unit contains many secrets and much intrigue. Follow this author to Boston and discover what they are. A good writer whose books always hold my interest.

THE LOBOTOMIST’S WIFE by Samantha Greene Woodruff

A powerful and relevant book for our troublesome times. This book illuminates the time period when lobotomies were performed on individuals who suffered from depression or severe psychotic episodes. Women were particularly targeted for displaying symptoms of post-partum depression. A page-turner—it demonstrates the power of women, advocating for women.

CYCLORAMA by Adam Langer

This engaging book follows ten teenagers as they navigate adolescence during the turbulent era of the 1960’s. The vehicle for their experiences is the play ANNE FRANK. A powerful novel that raises many societal issues.

FAKE by Erica Katz

A timely book given that artistic fakes are being discovered at prominent galleries around the country. A naive woman is caught up in the high-end art world where boundaries are often muddied.

WOMAN ON FIRE by Lisa Barr

A perfect companion read to the book FAKE. If you are intrigued by the art world and what great works of art mean to families-- this multi-generational novel explores those topics. Another page turner.

TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW by Gabrielle Zevin

A searing look at a decades long friendship and the influence of the gaming world. Traveling from Los Angeles to Boston, Massachusetts, Zevin sets the stage for us to explore this dynamic, new world of gaming. Along the way, we have to examine what relationships mean to us and to the outside culture as the world of technology forever changes our perception of ourselves and each other. Excellent!!

LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus

A must read for all. We go back in time where women scientists were not valued and unable to pursue their careers. A compelling story that explores an unconventional love story and a recognition of parenthood and its challenges. Much gratitude to the author for reminding us how far we have come and how far we must travel as a society. I rooted for the main character every step of the way.
