Literary ‘Quarantini’

In these challenging times, I look to put things in perspective. To that end, I have composed ingredients that I believe helps one to do so. Enjoy the ‘literary mocktail’ and the real one. Sip and read!

  1. One Part- Charles Dickens—any Dicken masterpiece will do. My favorite Great Expectations says it all.

  2. One Part- Anne Frank— The Diary of a Young Girl, need I say more? Teens today especially could embrace her message of hope. Her manner of coping was inspirational. We need to learn from history, and she is one of the best to enlighten us.

  3. Two Parts- James McBride—Deacon King Kong, the new work by a great storyteller. A compelling account of life in New York’s inner-city during the 1960s. The characters and issues resonate today and the humor that is incorporated into the work is a respite from the tragic circumstances many of the inhabitants of this housing project face. Food (or the main character, Sportscoat’s drink) for thought.

  4. Two Parts- Michael Frank—What Is Missing, a contemporary tale that draws you in from the beginning. Issues of identity, fertility and trust combine to weave a story that make one examine your own values and choices in life.

  5. Cherry on Top- Phaedra Patrick—The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, what better way to escape than with a delightful distraction? This British gem revives your spirit and provides a much-needed escape as Arthur deals with the next chapter in his life.

  6. Extra Cherry on Top—Randy Susan Meyers—Waisted, a novel that has it all. Meyers’ storytelling draws you in and makes you question in a more lighthearted albeit evocative way how: parenting, significant relationships and society reinforce our body image. A book that pops into your mind when you least expect it. Additionally, as a speaker she is engaging and informative. A must read.

Mix and enjoy!
